玻璃质透明度和结构发育程度
玻璃质由透明、半透明至不透明，珍珠岩结构由极发育、较发育至不发育，膨胀倍数相应地由大变小。
透长石及石英斑晶含量
玻璃质中透长石及石英斑晶的存在，不利矿石膨胀。具有斑晶的珍珠岩膨胀后，其气孔相互联通，造成孔隙过大，影响绝热性能
含铁量
矿石含铁量过高，影响产品的颜色，且有降低膨胀效果的趋势。
含水量
矿石含水量是影响产品质量的因素之一。

外观形态
形态是珍珠岩醒目的外观特征之一。不同的珍珠岩征性形态，同一种珍珠岩，因为形成条件不同，由于内部结构、成分等不同，往往有其他特征也可能以不同的形态出现是识别珍珠岩的标志，也是分析珍珠岩成因的依据。
对晶质珍珠岩形态的研究以单体和体为主形态。因此，珍珠岩的形态不仅。对固态非晶质准(或似)珍珠岩，则只有体珍珠岩的单体形态珍珠岩单体即珍珠岩的单个晶体。珍珠岩单体形态主要包括珍珠岩晶体结晶习性(具体体现在晶体形状上)及晶面花纹两个方面.
